Accounting Specialist

The Refuge Accounting Specialist is responsible for the Accounting and Finance duties for The Refuge Central Services as assigned/approved by the CFO of The Refuge for DMST. Projects will vary in scope and nature, ranging from technical and administrative solutions implementation to bookkeeping duties. Job will require analytical thinking, creative problem solving, effective multi-tasking, and the ability to assess cross-organizational impacts while recommending and implementing solutions quickly. He or She may work with management, staff, and outside contractors/vendors.

Accounting Specialist (Part-time- 20 hrs./wk)

JOB SUMMARY

The Refuge Accounting Specialist is responsible for the Accounting and Finance duties for The Refuge Central Services as assigned/approved by the CFO of The Refuge for DMST™. Projects will vary in scope and nature, ranging from technical and administrative solutions implementation to bookkeeping duties. Job will require analytical thinking, creative problem solving, effective multi-tasking, and the ability to assess cross-organizational impacts while recommending and implementing solutions quickly. He or She may work with management, staff, and outside contractors/vendors.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

The following statements of duties and responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required within this position.

  • Work with the CFO and the Board Treasurer to ensure that financial procedures are followed, and that financial reports are issued in a timely manner.

  • Work with CEO, CFO and Executive Director to produce timely cash flow analysis, track PO’s and invoices, and general reporting necessary to maintain budget schedule

  • Track and manage financial data, including donations of money, in-kind and time (volunteers); process expense reports; prepare purchase orders; prepare deposits; check account balances; and ensure that transactions are appropriately documented and filed

  • Collaborate with the Donor Relations and Data Manager and other staff as needed to ensure that donor and accounting records are accurate and aligned.

  • Responsible for day to day accounting procedures and implementing existing organizational accounting policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • High School.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to analyze very detailed, complicated, intertwined technical concepts, identify organizational and system impacts, and recommend and implement solutions.

  • Mid-level knowledge of accounting principles.

  • Strong technical knowledge in laptop/desktop usage, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), Microsoft Teams/SharePoint/One Drive, Adobe Acrobat, internet and website usage, with an ability to figure out quickly how new applications and software work. General knowledge about wifi, printers/copiers, and laptop equipment.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.

  • Commitment to the mission of The Refuge for DMST.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team to achieve goals.

  • Ability to plan and organize and manage time effectively.

  • Ability to handle a number of tasks simultaneously and effectively prioritize work.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work with people at all levels and in all roles in the organization is necessary as this position is cross-organizational and cross-functional in nature.

  • Ability to think independently and be comfortable sharing opinions, discussing options, and making decisions.
