What We Need Most
Find out what you can do to “Be the One” to help the residents of The Refuge Ranch
A letter from founder and ceo, Brooke Crowder
If this is your first visit to our website, I'd like to share with you a bit about our mission, plus how you can "Be the One" to help child sex trafficking survivors recover at a place of hope and healing.
The Refuge Ranch is a $7 million labor of love, nestled among the Bastrop County pine trees. Developed by The Refuge for DMST™ (Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Refuge Ranch, is a long-term, residential, therapeutic community for 48 girls, minors through age 19, who have been rescued out of sex trafficking. Built from the ground up on 50 acres in a beautiful and restorative setting, The Refuge Ranch provides trauma-informed, holistic care for the girls on site, including: a University of Texas Charter School program, a medical clinic staffed by community partners and various therapeutic programs uniquely designed for the development of a child survivor.
The Refuge Ranch, with 48 beds, is the largest long-term, live-in rehabilitation facility for child survivors of sex trafficking in the United States. (See some recent photographs of The Refuge Ranch from last week.)
Here’s why The Refuge Ranch is needed:
- Child sex trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the world.
- In the U.S. there was an 846% increase in reported child sex trafficking cases from 2010 to 2015.
- There are currently 79,000 young adults and minors being sex trafficked in Texas.
- Texas has the second most reported number of child sex trafficking cases in the U.S.
- There are less than 600 beds available nationwide for child sex trafficking survivors, but we have over 13,000 animal shelters.
- Prior to the opening of The Refuge Ranch, Texas only had 24 beds available for child survivors’ long term recovery from trauma.
What’s next for The Refuge Ranch:
Now as we’re turning from construction of this very special place towards an even more special call – to care for our most vulnerable children – we need help to sustain their long-term care.
By every standard, The Refuge Circle of Care™ will intentionally provide the very best holistic and comprehensive care available.
We knew that to compromise the level of the girls’ care would only communicate to them a diminished value of their lives. I wouldn't allow that for my own daughter, so this was never an option, but this level of care is costly. Based on research, it is our estimation that it will cost between $350-$400 a day per girl to provide our Circle of Care. The State of Texas, when it does eventually come alongside us, in most cases will not come close to subsidizing that cost.
What we need most (here's where you come in):
We have said from the beginning: If everyone did just one thing, the cumulative effect would be powerful.
The Central Texas community heard our call and powerfully responded. Everyone did “one thing," often many things, and together we built and opened The Refuge Ranch.
Now The Refuge needs another powerful, long-term effort to provide the best in long-term care for child sex trafficking survivors.
If you can help a child on her road to hope and healing with a monthly pledge of any amount, it doesn't matter the size, please click here:
One person doing one thing to help one girl. That’s what our “Be the One” slogan is all about!
